Abstract: Let G be a finite group. The representation  theory of G was first studied by Frobenius in 1896. It has become a very active field with applications to other parts of mathematics but also to chemistry. In the last 50 years this subject has much benefited from ideas in algebraic geometry and topology. We will try to explain some of these ideas.
